Red Sox Or Red Sock?

This is a question that I have been trying to get a handle on for a while but I haven't been able to find a definitive answer. redsoxI'm hoping that our always insightful readers can help me out. When referring to an individual member of the Red Sox, should you write "Red Sox David Ortiz" or "Red Sock David Ortiz?" I've seen it both ways.

Basically, the Red Sox are the Red Sox because Red Stockings took up too much column space so early 20th century Boston newspapermen came up with the shortened version. I don't think that most people view the Red Sox as a collection of "Red Socks." It's just seems weird to me to refer to a player as a "Red Sock."

And I promise that this will be the last grammar-related blog.
